The challenges 

Despite a slight overall decline in total job vacancies in 2024, finance & accounting vacancies rose by 8%, and temporary finance roles grew by 7–19% across 20242025. These increases highlight a persistent shortage of talent but also a high-turnover as Finance professionals in Belgium typically remain in roles for just 1.9 years on average.  

 

This sector is facing a major transformation driven by technological advancements:

AI and automation are increasingly automating routine tasks, elevating roles to strategic advisory positions focused on insights and interpretation.

Blockchain and cybersecurity expertise are increasingly valued in roles involving compliance and transparency.

Growing demand for ESG reporting knowledge, particularly for finance professionals involved in sustainability measurement and compliance frameworks like GRI or SASB.

Technical fluency in ERP, BI platforms, real-time financial reporting tools (Power BI, Oracle, Tableau, etc.) is a must.

Flexible working models (hybrid/remote) and strong organizational culture are top determinants in attracting and retaining talent.

Regulatory & Compliance Awareness 

We also check the understanding of local and international accounting standards (IFRS, GAAP), awareness of regulatory frameworks like SOX compliance, AML/KYC rules for financial services and familiarity with tax laws in relevant jurisdictions. 

Financial Market & Business Acumen 

Recruiting for a Finance role also means evaluating the ability to discuss P&L impacts, cash flow, and balance sheet drivers with credibility, understanding how economic trends, interest rates, and inflation influence finance roles as well as assessing the candidate’s awareness of emerging finance priorities such as ESG reporting and digital transformation. 

 

We are also able to carry out deeper candidate assessments covering technical skills (e.g., Excel modelling tests, case studies), soft skills critical in finance: attention to detail, ethics, stakeholder communication and of course covering career progression paths so we can look at long-term fit, not just the short term job.
